Governments are corrupt, always and everywhere. The form of government has no effect on this universality. Nor does its time or place effect this truism.
Almost a century ago, Albert J. Nock wisely observed:
Taking the State wherever found, striking into its history at any point, one sees no way to differentiate the activities of its founders, administrators and beneficiaries from those of a professional-criminal class
Of course he wasn’t the first one to notice. After all, this axiom has been true of governments throughout recorded history.
Peter C. Earle documents an excellent example in Withholding Consent from the Khan, an account that begins in 1206. Read it and see if we are not about seeing the beginnings of a similar reaction to the concepts of central banks and fractional reserve banking systems.
