A very interesting infographic on guns, gold and gasoline is available at Zerohedge. It shows the price changes by year from 2001 forward for these items.
Did gold outperform the other two? What do these prices suggest about inflation?

I like ammo as an investment or storehouse. As I and my friends put it, our precious metals-gold, silver and lead. When Obama first got elected the gun and ammo market went berzerk. I bought several guns and continue to do so (now I just tell my wife that they’re my son’s who is at home now after getting out of the army). She doesn’t notice my occasional ammo purchases, or if so she doesn’t mind that too much. A neighbor over the hill asked my son if I had any .22 rifle to trade for a 40 S&W auto. My son brought the pistol up with a box of ammo, as it turned out it was a Hi-Point which is a very cheap pistol, but it looked pretty neat and after cleaning it up, test firing and reading some reviews on-line, I traded my Ruger .22 that I’ve had for years for it. I probably made a poor trade based on replacement cost, but I was able to pick up an unregistered pistol and traded a rifle I don’t use for anything.
There’s a number of sites on-line that are really good to deal with and buy ammo at much better prices than can be bought locally. Ammunition to go and J&G are my two favorites. 5.56 ammo can actually be bought cheaper than the cost to reload, or at least close to it. I store my ammo in five gallon plastic buckets, throw in some dissecants, and tape the lid with rubber cable splicing tape that creates an air-tight seal. A while back I fired up some 5.56 and some 7.62 x 39 that I had stored back in the early 90′s, worked perfect.
Now why all of this rambling? Well, I just got up and am not fully awake yet, only one cup of coffee so far. Ate some of my wife’s Christmas fudge so probably on a mild sugar high.
I believe that we are doomed and if society collapses, guns and ammunition will be more valuable for use or trading until things stablize even enough for gold or silver to be of use. Anyway have a nice day.
