For those who want to see what it was like 70 years ago, these pictures were taken from color slides found at the Library of Congress. They are dated between 1939-1943. The pictures are so clear and the color is so vibrant, it looks as though they were taken just yesterday.

The caption for these photos says, “These images, by photographers of the Farm Security Administration/Office of War Information, are some of the only color photographs taken of the effects of the Depression on America’s rural and small town populations. The photographs are the property of the Library of Congress and were included in a 2006 exhibit Bound for Glory: America in Color.” What I see in them is not the “effects of the Depression” but an amazing vibrancy and power. This is the country, hard-working, both rural and industrial, growing food, eating home cooked meals, that won World War II. My Dad was around ten when at the time of the pictures, growing up in small town America. If the US was today the country in those pictures show, I would consider moving back.
