Here is a case study in why your taxes are so high. It is the story of municipal/county involvement in Harrison, NJ.

Your town/city has not done anything nearly this egregious (unless you live in a big city), but Harrison is probably a reasonable metaphor for the nonsense that goes on at every level of government. In smaller towns, the “monuments” are just not as big.

Every politician has a dream of making the place under his/her jurisdiction better, with your money. That is why taxes continue upward even as the basic services to be provided by government decline.
