According to Albert J. Nock the State is little different from the Mafia:

Taking the State wherever found, striking into its history at any point, one sees no way to differentiate the activities of its founders, administrators and beneficiaries from those of a professional-criminal class

A video presentation by an “insider,” John Perkins, seems to confirm Nock’s early (probably in the late 1920s) recognition regarding government. This insider tells the real story (according to him) of how America controls the world and its resources in The Inside World of an Economic Hitman. I am not enough of a historian or conspiracy nut to pass judgment on the validity of his contentions.

He makes his case in a plausible manner. It is certainly consistent with a number of anomalies (why do we have military bases in so many countries? ;why do we support bad regimes?; why do we keep butting into others’ affairs?; etc.).

If, in fact, our government’s desire is to control the rest of the world, Perkins’ methods should be effective. Similar techniques work for the Mafia.

Fascinating video, but up to others to judge regarding how true it may be.  It is not inconsistent with my view of government or my limited view of history.

Comments on this piece, especially from those knowledgeable in this area, are especially welcome.
