Arguably, the only role of government is to provide internal and external security (i.e., defense). The fact that it has entered so many aspects of our lives beyond that is prima facie evidence that politicians have motives beyond good and proper governance.

There is no better indication of the conflict between politics and true governmental purpose than the TSA unionization issue. Public choice theory lives and is validated everyday. The TSA issue as discussed by Kim Strassel is just another, although blatant, example:

Even as state battles rage, the Obama administration has been facilitating the largest federal union organizing effort in history. Tens of thousands of Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screeners are now casting votes to choose a union to collectively bargain for cushier personnel practices on their behalf.

Liberals are calling it a “historic” vote. It is. Henceforth, airport security will play second fiddle to screener “rights.”

I certainly will feel safer with government unionized employees harassing and insulting me as I try to travel.

Why not turn the whole country into one gigantic DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles)?
