The first and foundational obligation of all governments is to ensure that its citizens are secure in their homes and property. Fail at this and legitimacy erodes quite quickly.
Subjects like illegal immigration, Hezbollah, Iran, FARC, medium range missiles, and Hugo Chavez are not totally separate and unrelated agenda items. It is no secret that our southern border is unsecure, and it seems only a matter of time before the violence and disorder that have come to control Mexico penetrate deep in to the US. Mexico is, in the opinion of many, bordering on a failed state and in the future it may rest with the US to take action. The violence and rampant corruption are eroding the legitimacy of not only the Mexican government, but the political process itself.
On 12-12-10 redstate.com published an insightful piece about Mexico and its dangerous drug cartels. It likened Mexico to another Afghanistan, and while the analogy only goes so far, it has some salient points that make it worth careful reading.
In conjunction with this, back in September Smallwars.com published a well written and very tightly worded piece regarding the ongoing working relations between Mexican
drugs cartels, Hezbollah, and various radical guerilla groups in South and Central America. Beside drugs, Mexican cartels are actively smuggling Middle Eastern men, most likely members of Hezbollah, directly into the United States. Hezbollah is a ruthless and atrocious organization directly involved in drugs, weapons, murder, human trafficking, and social unrest. Its list of criminal abuses and destabilizing political behavior is too great to ignore.
It is maddening to see that a lack of genuine concern amongst political leaders here in the US to take this issue seriously. Political correctness has emasculated both our political elites and out fourth estate to the point that the health and safety of US Citizens takes a very distant back seat to politically correct reporting, policing, border enforcement, immigration enforcement, and legislation. I fear that only a mass atrocity will snap this losing hand we citizens are playing with in direct opposition to those in Washington, DC.
Strong and sustained border and workplace controls are desperately necessary. Greater intelligence gathering and counter insurgency efforts must be undertaken. Serious and ruthlessly rapid deportation efforts must be made when residents here in the US are sheltering anyone connected to Hezbollah or any Mexican drug cartel. Your right to stay here does not take precedence to my right to staying alive.
Will our lack of seriousness to confront the problems end up costing American lives?
In a word: Yes.
Why? Because your right to being secure in your home and property takes a distant second to the political and media elites being politically correct.

For the same reason that denial of gravity inevitably fails. In fact, it already is failing-and flailing. Just look around. The question is simply how far people are willing to accept the charade by our political and cultural elites. Eventually the truth breaks out. This is also likely to happen at about the same time that the money runs out.
