The Wall Street Journal had an excellent article by Peter Berkowitz about the political divide in our country:
Highly educated people say the darndest things, these days particularly about the tea party movement. Vast numbers of other highly educated people read and hear these dubious pronouncements, smile knowingly, and nod their heads in agreement. University educations and advanced degrees notwithstanding, they lack a basic understanding of the contours of American constitutional government.
These smug, educated-beyond-their-level-of-competence liberals have ascended to power positions outside of private industry (i.e., government, academe and the main-stream media). Their education, at the finest schools, is void of real understanding of history, political science and the Constitution. They were taught by like-minded people who view themselves as a superior class to the rest of us.
Blinded by the certainty of their virtue and superiority it is impossible for them to understand what is happening in the country:
Those who doubt that the failings of higher education in America have political consequences need only reflect on the quality of progressive commentary on the tea party movement. Our universities have produced two generations of highly educated people who seem unable to recognize the spirited defense of fundamental American principles, even when it takes place for more than a year and a half right in front of their noses.
The liberal elites are detached from reality. They know what is right for the rest of us, no matter what we think. That is why they imposed Obamacare on the nation, despite its unpopularity. That is why they continue to defend it even as the opposition grows as more details of the program become known.
The disconnect between these elite ideologues and the rest of us is so great that November 2 is unlikely to be understood by them. The outcome likely will be blamed on either a “temper tantrum” or the ignorance of the voters. More than a few of these elitists will be wondering: “Why did we ever give the little, stupid people the right to vote?”
To put the matter into perspective, this video of Reagan (shown in another post here just two days ago) interspersed with our current politicians deftly shows the contrast between the people and the politicians:
Yes, they are that arrogant and self-righteous!
