The article below is long and worth reading. It captures much of what many Americans now feel about their country.

It is well-referenced with historical quotes that indicate the fears and prescience of our ancestors. Much of the knowledge that preceded us has been lost, seemingly displaced by the mass attraction of soap operas, Dancing With the Stars and American Idol. Our intellectual level seems to be measured in Tweets and Facebook revelations — twits tweeting or cellphone grazing.

There is much contained below to like and much asserted and not adequately supported. Its value lies in expressing the mood of so many. I am wary of some of the assertions, but leave you to sort out the wheat from the chaff.

The Financial Oligarchy Reigns: Democracy's Death Spiral From Greece to the United StatesDemocracy throughout the world is under attack. Many people can make the argument that our democracy here in America is only an illusion, but even the illusion of democracy is crashing down. Tragedies are currently playing out across the world on an epic scale. Unprecedented economic and environmental catastrophes have become the norm. Billions of people, the overwhelming majority of humanity, have been sentenced to a slow death due to a concentration of wealth and resources within humanity’s economic top 0.5%. Ultimately, short-sighted greed has proven to be humanity’s most severe disease.

One Response to “Democracy Down, Oligarchy Up”

  1. There is much important information within. But it is regrettable that these opinions and proscriptions are not much different than the disease.

Democracy is not some wonderful thing. Hamilton-Madison–”The ancient democracies in which the people themselves deliberated never possessed one good feature of government. Their very character tyranny; their figure deformity. Had every Athenian citizen been a Socrates, every Athenian Assembly would have still been a mob.” We could only have so much raging foolishness in a world-wide democracy.

A concentration of wealth affects nothing badly in a capitalistic society, and never did. A concentration of power does. Ambition counters ambition, the only useful form of regulation.
